THE GRAND ADVENTURE
Chapter
Two A TREASURE HUNT AND A SURPRISE
Next day, all the children were up, bright and
early. Auntie managed a little breakfast, sat in her beautiful white
negligee at the kitchen table, and now, with a hint of pink in her cheeks.
Jack was just having his second boiled egg in a silver egg cup, when, who
should knock respectfully, at the kitchen door, but Mr. Martin Squires! "Have you brought the Elddis 180 motorhome?" squealed the children together.
"No, no, no! I have travelled up in my vintage
‘Beauford’ white convertible from my Squires Wedding Cars' business.
Much more appropriate in the circumstances, children. Well, Madam,"
said Mr. Squires, “how are you feeling? You are still looking a
little pasty. Rather white, not your usual pearly pink complexion, if
I might say, Madam! Anyhow, there is good news. I stopped in at "I have come, to take you to the hospital,” said Mr. Squires. “My wife, Lel, and my father-in-law, Mr. John Russell-White, have kindly agreed to look after the businesses, including Devon Limo-Hire, whilst I help out. There is only one problem, Madam. Could my sons, Matthew and Ben, stay here and play with the children? I feel that a hospital is not a fit place for the children." "Oh, Mr. Squires," trilled Aunty Diana, now miraculously recovered and with her pretty pink cheeks glowing. "Oh, Mr. Squires, yes, yes, yes, anything! The children would love the company. I will be only two ticks!"
Millie,
the cook, gave Mr. Squires a steaming mug of tea, with the creamiest of milk
from the home farm cows, whilst his children, who had already been welcomed
by the friendly four, were whooping and gambolling around the vast and
exciting grounds. Suddenly, Ben stopped in his tracks. Something
silver was glinting under his feet! He called excitedly to Jack,
Matthew and Roger who were playing football on the lawn. "Come quickly, boys! There is something silver here twinkling in the grass!"
His
calls had not reached, Susan, Sam and Spiffy who were tending their little
rockery on the other side of the garden. There were heaps of pretty
flowers of many hues. "I do so like the pink, white and silver ones," said Susan.
"Oh! You’re such a
cissy," retorted Sam. "I really wanted to play football with
Matthew, but you needed someone with some muscle to hoe and pull the weeds.
Oh," she sighed, "I do so wish things were different and we were
off to
"Come quickly, girls! Ben
has found something silver that looks suspiciously like treasure." So, Sam, Susan, Spiffy and Roger, ran quickly round to join the others where they stood surveying the strange, silver object, in the White Shrubbery. All at once, their attention was distracted. Mr. Martin Squires and Auntie Diana had arrived, not in the ivory ‘Beauford’, but in the hero Motorhome, in all its white glory, shining and sparkling in the strong sunlight. Its tinted windows stood out in vivid contrast to the rest of its sleek body. "Oh!" said Auntie. "Thank goodness for the tinted windows, Martin. I really thought that after the drive in the ‘Beauford’, my migraine would return, but the Motorhome's tinted windows saved the day. In fact, Martin, your Motorhome seems to be act like a super-car, a super limousine which is just so out of this world!" "Auntie! Mr. Squires! Please come and look! Ben has found this silver treasure!" "Hello, son," said Mr. Squires, affectionately. "Hello, Dad," said Ben. "Look what I have found!” Matthew rushed over to greet his father who playfully ruffled his son's hair. "Oh! Oh! Oh! What have we here?" said Mr. Squires. "You two, in your excitement, haven't even noticed that I brought the Motorhome.” "Golly, Dad, where are we going then?" said Ben and Matthew together.
"Well,
gather round everyone, because you are in for the surprise of your
lives," said Mr. Squires. "Your Auntie and Uncle, children,
have entrusted you into my care. Not wanting to disappoint you
further, they have suggested that I still take you on your Grand Adventure.
We would go in the silver Motorhome with the tinted windows, the air
conditioning, the rough terrain tyres, the gorgeous interior and, room for a
plenty of room for a hamper, to "Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!" chorused the children. "Three cheers for Mr. Martin Squires and his fleet of limousines; three cheers for the ‘Motorhome’ ; three cheers Mr Squires.
